Why I Love Living with Four Seasons — and How You Can Too, No Matter Where You Live

Out here in Southwest Colorado, the rhythm of life is written in the sky.

The sun arcs differently in each season, the canyon winds shift, and our lavender fields whisper their own kind of calendar—waking in spring, blooming wildly in summer, slowing to rest in fall, and sleeping under snow in winter.

I didn’t always realize how much I depended on these natural cues until I left.

When I moved to Ohio for college, I found myself struggling through the long, gray winters and damp summers that felt somehow less bright than the light I grew up with. The lack of sunshine seeped into my mood, and I realized something profound: my nervous system depends on the rhythm of change. I need to see and feel the seasons turn.

Now, I treasure that rhythm more than ever. The four seasons here in Colorado don’t just change the land—they shape who I am.

Even though I sometimes dream about living in Puerto Rico—my husband’s beautiful homeland, full of color, family, and sea—I know I’d have to intentionally create my seasons there. Because the truth is: living in seasons isn’t just about the weather. It’s about the way we move through time, with intention.

🌾 Living Seasonally for Nervous System Balance

Living with the rhythm of the seasons helps regulate our nervous systems. When we honor cycles of rest and renewal, we move from constant alertness (that wired, anxious energy so common in modern life) to flow and balance.

Each season offers cues our bodies crave:

  • Winter asks us to slow down, reflect, and restore.

  • Spring invites us to stretch, dream, and start again.

  • Summer energizes us to create, connect, and shine.

  • Autumn teaches us to harvest, release, and give thanks.

This rhythm helps us feel grounded and whole. It reminds us that it’s okay to ebb and flow—that every burst of growth deserves a period of rest.

🌿 How to Live in “Four Seasons,” Even If You Don’t Have Them

Whether you live in Puerto Rico, California, or Florida—where the landscape may not shift dramatically—you can still practice living seasonally. You just have to create your own cues.

🌱 Spring: Awaken & Renew

• Clean out a space—your home, your mind, your digital world.
• Plant something, even if it’s herbs on a windowsill. I highly recommend marigolds, sunflowers, and calendula for easy and happy plants!
• Journal about what’s been sleeping inside you and is ready to grow.

☀️ Summer: Create & Connect

• Spend more time outdoors—on your porch, in the garden, or by the water.
• Cook vibrant, colorful meals. Bonus points if you use our Culinary Lavender!
• Say yes to social gatherings, art, and music that bring you joy. To be the life of the party, bring some sparkling waters and our Lavender Simple Syrup to make a refreshing treat for all to enjoy!

🍂 Autumn: Reflect & Release

• Simplify: let go of what’s no longer serving you—projects, habits, even clutter.
• Take walks in nature and notice small details changing around you.
• Practice gratitude daily while sipping a Sweet Dreams Tea before bed.

❄️ Winter: Rest & Restore

• Light candles, drink warm teas (like our Lady Lavender Grey, Heart’s Brew, or Sweet Dreams teas), and give yourself permission to rest.
• Reflect on the past year and set intentions for the next.
• Practice gentle movement like stretching or slow yoga.

🌙 A Final Thought

For me, being a farmer in Colorado means I have to pause when the snow comes. The fields go quiet, and so do I. That pause is sacred.

If I ever live somewhere tropical, I know I’ll have to create my own winter—my own time for hibernation and stillness. Because life isn’t meant to be one long summer. We thrive when we honor the rhythm of the Earth—within us and around us.

So wherever you are, listen for your seasons. Let them guide you home to yourself. I invite you to take out your journal and write about how you are practicing seasonal living and what you want to add to your next season!
