This October, we’re welcoming Kaleigh Campbell of Fox Willow Fold in Dolores, Colorado to Mesa Verde Lavender for a rare opportunity to work with real wool-on sheepskin and learn the traditional art of bark tanning.
Kaleigh raises the sheep herself and works with their hides from beginning to end. This workshop is an invitation into that full process - from animal, to hide, to beautifully finished leather - guided by someone deeply connected to the material.
You can join us for the single-day Sheepskin Craft Workshop, or go deeper with the full four-class Bark Tanning Experience, where you’ll tan your own sheepskin from beginning to end and craft something from the finished hide.
Space is intentionally limited so each participant can receive hands-on guidance throughout the process.

This is the heart of the experience.
Over four gatherings, you’ll take a sheepskin through its entire transformation — from raw hide to something finished, useful, and entirely your own.
Working alongside Kaleigh over three autumn evenings, you’ll learn the traditional bark-tanning process using mimosa tannin. You’ll prepare the hide, tan it, dress and dry the leather, and then return for the final workshop to craft something from the sheepskin you tanned yourself.
Rather than simply working with a finished material, you’ll understand how it came to be.
By the end of the course, you’ll have followed one hide through each stage of the process and leave with a finished sheepskin piece shaped by your own hands.
For anyone drawn to traditional skills, natural materials, slow craft, or learning where things truly come from, this is a rare opportunity to learn the process firsthand.

Each participant will receive an approximately 16" x 16" piece of wool-on, bark-tanned sheepskin prepared for the class.
Kaleigh will guide you through finishing both the leather and wool before helping you transform your piece into something beautiful and functional.
Possible projects include:
A cozy sheepskin collar or cowl
A roll-up travel-sized sitting pad
A luxurious pair of sheepskin insoles
You’ll leave with a finished piece and a deeper understanding of the material, the animal it came from, and the traditional process behind it.
No previous leatherworking or tanning experience is needed. All materials are included.

Kaleigh Campbell is the shepherdess and tanner behind Fox Willow Fold in Dolores, Colorado.
Her work begins long before a hide reaches the tanning table. Kaleigh raises sheep herself and works with traditional tanning techniques to transform their hides into beautiful, functional wool-on sheepskins.
Her practice is rooted in using materials thoughtfully, honoring the animal, and preserving skills that were once part of everyday life but are increasingly rare to experience firsthand.
We’re especially excited to bring this kind of hands-on, place-based craft to the farm.
